Kindness Counts

Mama Lessons…Kindness

To continue our topic of virtues we are working on in our house…kindness would be right at the top. It is rather difficult to explain kindness to little children. I believe they are also working on being kind in Sunday School because LaLa asked me if I told her teacher about “being kind”. I told her that everybody knows about kindness…not just mama. LaLa is an expert at pointing out when someone is NOT being kind. Now, we just have to get her to understand the RIGHT way to be kind to others!

Last night, we were sitting down to dinner, and LaLa was leaning over and taking food items off of Little Bit’s high chair tray to put it in her mouth. Little Bit was completely amused by this for a little while. However, eventually, Little Bit had enough of LaLa feeding her. She was starting to get mad swiping at her big sister’s hand and pulling away. LaLa sternly told Little Bit as she was trying her hardest to stuff a pea in her mouth, “Now, open your mouth and let me put this in! I am trying to be kind to you!” It was a great opportunity to AGAIN explain the concept of being kind…at poor Little Bit’s expense! I am still not sure LaLa grasps the concept of being kind, but then again, we, as adults, often miss the concept of being kind as well! We want to be kind….the way WE want to be kind…when it’s convenient…when it’s noticed…when it’s our way. We miss so many opportunities to be kind that way. Not only that, but we like LaLa, are totally missing the concept of kindness.

Mama Drama Rule #31: Don’t force your way of kindness on people. Look for opportunities and show kindness willingly and openly. And, remember, the golden rule applies to all…even grown ups!
